My husband and I moved into a fifth wheel in 2020, and we’ve loved every moment of RV life. However, there were some hurdles to overcome. Knowing what to bring for your camping trip can be difficult, but after two years as a full-time RVer, I’m here to share my advice. Here are my RV tips for the gadgets you want in your RV.
Do Not Skip Out on an RV Surge Protector
I will stress this time and time again, do not hook up your RV without an RV surge protector. You can get one on Amazon for around $200, and it’s completely worth it. This protects your RV’s electrical system in case of a power surge and could save you thousands in repairs.
Treat Yourself and Upgrade Your Shower Head
We didn’t do this right away, but I wish we had. The showerhead in our RV worked just fine, and our showers were comfortable. However, when we decided to upgrade the shower head, it made a world of difference. Instead of a drizzle, we have a strong stream and a few different settings to choose from, so everyone can enjoy a relaxing, comfortable shower.
Either Upgrade Your RV Mattress or Get a Mattress Topper
There are two ways to go about your sleeping situation in your RV: upgrade the mattress or get a topper. For us, we love sleeping on a firmer bed, so the mattress that came with our RV suited us just fine. We got a topper to help prolong the life of the mattress, and we were good to go. However, there are a lot of people who need something softer to sleep on. Be sure you look for “RV queen” or “RV King” when getting your upgraded mattress.
Keep a Few Sewer Hoses on Hand
One unfortunate aspect of living in an RV is having to empty the black tank. The worst part of that is usually just the smell; however, if your RV sewage hose is getting old, you might run the risk of it breaking or cracking on you. It’s a good idea to keep a few extras on hand in your under-storage, just in case.
Stock Up on Disposable Gloves
Get a big box of disposable gloves and keep them in the under-storage near your black tank drain so that you’re always ready to handle the task ahead. We have had enough accidents draining the tanks; please learn from our mistakes!
Invest in an Instant Pot
I cannot tell you how much easier this one device has made cooking for my family. The Instant Pot works wonders on frozen chicken, cooks rice in no time, and is perfect for making soups at the campground. We use ours frequently and, although it does take up a lot of space, it’s well worth it.
