RV ownership presents a variety of challenges, and one of the most important challenges to overcome is proper food storage. Your RV kitchen is likely pretty small, much smaller than what you’re accustomed to at your house or apartment, and since you’re on the road and traveling in the wilderness so much, pest infestation is a much bigger problem.
So how do you keep your food properly contained in a small space prone to critter invasions? Here are our top RV food storage tips.
Keep Liquids Contained
Oils, vinegars, salad dressings, liquor and other fluids stored in glass or plastic bottles are liable to break and spill if you suddenly swerve on the road. Contain all your liquids in a larger plastic bin or container so that, if anything does shatter, the liquid doesn’t go all over the place.
Add Cabinet Storage Solutions
Since your kitchen is small and storage is at a premium, you should make use of unused space wherever possible. Install cabinet spice racks to hold your spices on the inside of your cabinet doors. Add magnetic knife strips to your wall. Install wire baskets or plastic containers in a pantry closet or on the back of a door. Mount a paper-towel holder on an empty piece of wall.
Opt for Dehydrated Foods
While they aren’t quite as delicious as their standard counterparts, dehydrated versions of your favorite foods are extremely RV-friendly as they help to save space and reduce weight since they don’t have any water in them. Opt for instant oatmeals, instant potatoes, instant coffee or tea, powdered dry milk or coffee creamer, dry soup packets and other dry foods that you can easily reconstitute on the road.
